It’s safe to assume that regardless of the time period your book/movie/TV show is set in, people generally like to be clean. That doesn’t mean they’ve always shared modern hygienic standards or technologies, obviously. But the last fifty years’ worth of media has done plenty to stress that pre-modern societies were a little gross, by contemporary sensibilities.
Many years ago, a beloved elder gave me a recipe for a turkey roulade that involved forcibly squishing herbs and garlic in amongst the layers of flesh. I balked and she replied, “Nothing is gross when you’re a mom!”
I want a medieval/early modern drama that has as much fun with the process of getting clean as Albrect Dürer's bathhouse etchings. The sight gag with the faucet in The Men's Bath always endears me to it but the ladies matter-of-factly scrubbing themselves over in the other woodcut are good too
hopefully the context of the piece fills in the blanks!! too many period pieces delight in representing “the past” as the filthiest possible den of muck
