this is.....WILD how MUCH this strikes a chord with me?? God, this reminds me how much 10 yr old me loved the Secret Confessions of Charlotte Doyle, the "disguised as a midshipman" story, even if it has no romance? But the "girl *has* to be a boy for, idk, IMPORTANT reasons that are not at all thrilling or erotic" trope is super common in manga, which is where I found it and would DEVOUR those for, idk man, just super chill, zero sexuality or gender reasons.

I love your phrase "The Great Chaste Lie"from the other story, because I'd grown my own private suspicion that as a young religious teen, those stories gave an outlet for the fantasy of "being close to a guy, treated like a friend/equal, but not giving up the erotic frisson there," that others would get from, idk, being allowed to date like a normal person?

but this is the first time I've thought of it as something else! I would honestly read....SO much on this? hahahaha <3

LOVE THIS. I recently watched a web series adaptation of Twelfth Night where Viola realises at the end that she's not only bi (she ends up with Olivia instead of Orsino, and Sebastian lives in another state, is trans and he has a boyfriend) but not as cis as she previously thought. It was great.

Delightful post! Struck a very interesting chord (I've always liked the 'young lady forced to crossdress for Reasons' narrative, and the reframing of it is so easy to see) but I am now wandering the desolate wastelands of the internet trying to find a copy of 'young blades'
