I agree that it's a cheap shot most of the time; I think part of the reason I used it briefly here was to puncture a particular automatically deferent/impressed response Americans can have towards a certain type of Britishness. But it's not the best part of this piece, I think, and there's a reason I don't use it often -- it gets old fast.
