Every time I watch All About Eve I come away more impressed than ever. Yesterday I went to a repertory showing at Film Forum, and if memory serves, that was my first time seeing it on the big screen. It is, deservedly, a gay classic, but at the same time it’s easily one of the most hidebound and sexually conservative movies from a remarkably hidebound and sexually conservative decade, which is a difficult trick to pull off.
Suddenly Last Summer is an interesting one because there's layers of obvious subtext... Like a moralist baklava. The incest, the Epstein-like globe-hopping---being gay and being reprehensible are a bit of a chicken/egg situation.
Who wrote this crap? Nothing you mentioned in this trash article is “lesbianism”. Breaking up heterosexual relationships is lesbianism? The anti-lesbian is screaming with every paragraph that it makes me wonder who hurt you. Did you lose your wife to a lesbian or something?
Daniel, you didn’t mention Margot’s most telling line. “Zanuck, Zanuck, Zanuck: what are you two, lovers?”
This was BRILLIANT! Thank you!
