Leaving the house for the afternoon: Better bring everything. You never know when the afternoon is going to turn into the evening, and by then you’re halfway to night. Rely on no battery, count on no charge. You might need deodorant. Also everything you would need for a quick shower, in case you’re invited to Noël Coward’s country house at the last minute and need to dress for dinner. A book, in case your chargers don’t work and you need to pass the time.
I made a spreadsheet with packing lists by length of trip because otherwise I am absolutely the guy who shows up for a one-night weekend getaway with nine pairs of underwear, no socks, no deodorant, no chapstick, two winter coats, hiking boots, a swimsuit, snowshoes, various medical braces in case my wrists start inexplicably acting up, no hairbrush, extra glasses, a brand new and unopened thing of dental floss, no toothbrush, and a sextant and astrolabe. I highly recommend the spreadsheet approach! I literally have the "but don't I NEED that second winter coat in Cabo San Lucas???" internal debate every single time but the fact that Past Self went to all the trouble of making this beautiful and authoritative spreadsheet is usually fairly convincing

This is why my handbag weighs 5.5 pounds
